Cosmetology Electives

The program provides basic theory along with hands-on practical experience to enable students to become competent in basic hair design and esthetics techniques. These courses are available to students in grades 9 – 12.  For more information please speak with Ms. Sandberg.

Introduction to Cosmetology 

This course is a one block elective that covers shampoo and rinse, hairstyling techniques (braiding, updo, curling iron, blow-dry, etc.), nail care, skin care, make-up application, career opportunities, and salon sanitation. The course will also cover personal health and nutrition, employment skills, and other topics.

Introduction to Esthetics 

This course covers makeup theory and application, skin care, facials, lash and brow tinting, brow shaping, manicure procedures and nail art techniques. Topics covered also include health and nutrition, color theory, analyzing facial shape, client consultations, salon safety procedures, and product knowledge, salon management, interpersonal skills, and career preparation (resume writing, job search, and interview skills)

Intermediate Cosmetology 

This course expands on the topics covered in Introduction to Cosmetology, as well as hair care, intermediate chemistry, hair removal, hair cutting, permanent waving, hair coloring, manicures and nail art, make-up applications, and employment skills.

Cosmetology Work Experience 

This course is completed outside of the timetable.  Students will be expected to work 120 hours in one or more salons to gain the knowledge, skills, and professionalism needed to be successful in the salon industry. It will enable the student to move directly into the apprenticeship training system while attending secondary school.
