Types of Career Programs

Here is a list of the Career Education Programs offered at Belmont. We invite employers and interested community members to volunteer their time to support our students. Your involvement can be one hour to 30 hours or more. Please contact the Career Centre if you are interested in having a Belmont student.

Spotlight Sessions – guest speakers present information about career areas or about an organization. Presentations can be in classes, during lunch time or as an information booth in the school foyer.

Informational Interviews – students can spend an hour to a few hours with an employer to discuss what is involved in the job including training required, duties, likes, dislikes, advancement, wage rates, benefits, etc.

Job Shadow – a one or two day work experience that involves the student going to the employer’s job site and participating in daily tasks. Job shadows give the student a better understanding of the job.

Work Experience – usually a 30 hour non-paid work placement. Students participate in the duties and activities related to the job under supervision. Students generally schedule their work experience after school and on weekends. Some students are available during the school hours.

Youth WORK in Trades (formerly known as Secondary School Apprenticeship (SSA) – students register as an apprentice and start accumulating hours toward trade certification. Students may also receive up to 16 high school credits for 480 hours of paid work. Students must be employed by a Trades Qualified Person (Journeyperson) and the student and employer are registered with Industry Training Authority (ITA). Work based Training Reports are submitted to the school while the student is attending school and to ITA after the student graduates. The employer is not obligated to employ the student after graduation.


Guidelines for Employers for Work Experience Placements

Before the Placement begins….

To ensure that the placement is a mutually beneficial experience for both the student and the employer, please consider the following suggestions:

• Where appropriate, interview the student prior to or on the first day of their work experience placement.
During the interview you may want to:
• set expectations,
• discuss company rules and regulations, and dress code,
• develop with the student a plan outlining the tasks and activities to be done,
• explain the need for confidentiality in the workplace, and
• confirm dates and times of the placement.
• Sign the Work Experience Placement Agreement, which covers students for WCB.
• Assign a suitable supervisor who will take responsibility for instructing and evaluating the student’s work experience activities. Ensure that the supervisor understands the expectations of the program.
• Prepare appropriate activities for the student. Plan to give the student a variety of tasks and duties that will provide him/her with a valuable learning experience.

On the student’s first day…

Upon the student’s arrival at the workplace, please take the time to:

• Sign the Work Experience Placement Agreement, if not already signed.
• Briefly confirm the student’s schedule and review times for breaks and lunch.

• Review safety rules and regulations and first aid procedures.
• Confirm procedures should the student be absent or late.
• Introduce the student to his/her workplace supervisor as required.
• Conduct a physical orientation of the workplace environment, including the washrooms, lunch room, entrance doors, supply rooms, etc.
• Introduce the student to regular work site employees with an explanation of the student’s role.
• Train the student on any equipment he/she will be required to use.
• Allow the student to observe tasks or equipment operations before he/she is expected to perform them.
• Remind the student that you expect him/her to ask questions regarding procedures, equipment, expectations, specific tasks, etc.

During the placement…

During the student’s time at your workplace, please take the time to:
• Provide the student with feedback about his/her performance and indicate ways to improve.
• Assign more difficult tasks requiring greater responsibility and initiative, as appropriate.
• Sign time log & journal provided by student.
• Communication with school Career Personnel to discuss the student’s overall performance.
• Contact the school’s Career Personnel immediately if injuries, emergencies, problems with behaviour, or work ethic arise.

On the student’s final day…

On the final day of the student’s Work Experience placement, it is important to:

• Complete the Employer Evaluation.
• Meet with the student to review the evaluation.

Safety During Work Experience

WorkSafe BC – Backgrounder for Employers

WorkSafeBC coverage is extended to students who are participating in BC Ministry of Education authorized Work Experience Programs at standard worksites.  Students who are attending public school and who are 14 years or older are deemed to be ‘Employees of the Crown’.  WorkSafe BC coverage is in place once the Work Experience Agreement has been signed and returned to the school.


Take the time to provide a health and safety orientation and training specific to the student’s workplace and use of equipment.

In the event of an injury to a student on Work Experience, follow these procedures:

•The student must report any injury immediately to his/her employer/supervisor and school Career Centre Coordinator.

•The employer must immediately inform the parent/guardian or emergency contact as written on the Work Experience Placement Agreement.

•Students are considered employees of the Ministry of Education while on school-arranged Work Experience and therefore the school will complete Form 7 (Employer’s Report of Injury or Occupational Disease)
